John Adams (1735-1826) was the first Vice President of the United States, and the second President. As one of the Founding Fathers, he contributed to the success of the Revolutionary War, one of those who persuaded Congress to declare independence in 1776. He also wrote most of the Massachusetts State Constitution in 1780. After 8 years as Washington's Vice President (1788-1797), he was elected in 1796 and served a single term from 1797 to 1801, during this time the U.S rebuilt its navy for the Quasi-War with France. Adams also singed the Alien and Sedition acts.
Which were signed during a sea conflict with France..It was made of four acts. The first three acts were about immigration . They made it required time for an immigrant to become a citizen and also allowed the president to send illegal immigrants back to their home country if their home country is at war with the United States or they are considered to be dangerous to the peace and safety of the United States. The fourth act made it illegal to publish bad things about the government.
The acts were very controversial (many people did not like them because they felt that they violated the First amendment).
The acts made many people not like John Adams. For that reason, Thomas Jefferson and the democratic-republican party were able to defeat John Adams and the Federalist party.
