Election Of 1976
- At the time that John Adams ran for president, there were two political parties; the federalist party and the democratic-republican party. John Adams was part of the federalist party.
- This election was held from Friday November 4, to Wednesday December 7, 1796.
- Adams ran against Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and Thomas Pinckey.
- People believed he wasn't fit to be president because he didn't have the dignity that Washington had. People saw Adams as a distant and cold person. Despite this, people, even opponents, respected his hard work, honesty, and intelligence.
- John Adams barely beat Thomas Jefferson in the election of 1796. At this time, the candidate that came in second place became the vice president.
- Adams won by a three-vote margin.
Changes He Wanted To Make
- Adams wanted to change and improve the relationship between the United States and France. Great Britain and France were at war. France began to seize American ships that were trading with Great Britain. France continued to be popular in America because of recent help winning the American Revolution. This changed though because of the XYZ affair. Which was bribes made French diplomats before they would negotiate the end of seizing American ships.
- John Adams also wanted the expand the military and keep a peacetime army of several thousand troops. Both of these ideas were approved by congress.

- John Adams lost the election of 1800, which he was running for a second term as president.
- He was beaten by his former vice president, Thomas Jefferson.
- At this time the federalist and democratic-republican party remained.
- Adams ran against Charles C. Pickney(federalist), Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr.
- Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr became president and vice-president.
